  • Should the Thailand Tourism Industry Use Price Cutting as a Recovery Tool?
Should the Thailand Tourism Industry Use Price Cutting as a Recovery Tool? Should the travel industry in Thailand drop its rates to bring back business? It is a hotly contested subject with many differing views. The Chapter will hold a debate on the subject on 28 July 1730-2000 hrs at Siam Ocean World. Speakers for and against include Chanin Donavanik, Chaladol Ussaman, Luzi Matzig, Wayne Buckingham and Jim Reed. There will be plenty of opportunities to make comment from the floor. The event is free for Chapter members who bring a Chapter 2010 luncheon voucher (worth 550 baht). Non-chapter members pay 800 baht to join. Prices include entry fees to the Siam Ocean World, hot and cold snacks & hors d'oeuvres as well as soft drinks. A cash bar is available. Importantly, please register in advance. pata@asiaaccess.net.th. Tel: 02 237 5195/9.
Chapter Meets With Permanent Secretary for Tourism
Members of the PATA Thailand Chapter Executive Committee made a courtesy call on 5 July to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Khun Arttachai Burakamkovit, in order to explore mutual opportunities to help tourism in Thailand. Issues such as unity within the tourism industry, facing the competitive challenges, developing new innovative tourism products and polices, support for the country’s recovery plans and the taxi situation in Phuket were discussed. Also attending was Khun Thanitta Savetsila Maneechote, the Deputy Permanent Secretary. She elaborated on the standards established by the Ministry and addressed HR concerns and potential cooperation with the Chapter. It was agreed to continue such meetings between the Chapter, the Ministry and the Office of Tourism Development. In recent months, the Chapter has forged closer personal and institutional relations with the Ministry and the TAT, specifically with Governor Suraphon Svetasreni.

The Importance of Professional Sales Calls
Has your sales team forgotten the art of the successful sales call? Do they too readily hiding behind the iPhone, Blackberry and social media platforms instead of really engaging the client’s needs? Do they know how to command attention with their opening greeting, paraphrase and recap the customer’s stated needs, assume control by asking permission to take the lead, ask direct questions to create clear understanding, make it easy for the customer to see the opportunity, ask for the business while closing the call, and many more techniques? To a ( potential ) customer WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) is the most important motivation to start the buying process. The art of making great sales calls will be addressed by The Winning Edge 29 and 30 July in Bangkok at a special seminar. For further information contact bert@twe-winningedge.com.
