Quality Versus Quantity in Thailand's Tourism One of the contradictions at the centre of the tourism industry - quality versus quantity tourism - will be addressed head-on by the PATA Thailand Chapter in January 2009. "The objective," said the Chapter's Chairman, Mr Luzi Matzig, Group CEO of Asian Trails, a major inbound tour operator in Asia, "is to show that the debate has profound implications for your destination's identity, its economic performance, the physical environment and the social-economic well-being of your people." He added: "There is often too much lip service in the quality vs quantity debate. We want to look at the real implications from a variety of perspectives." The debate will take place in Bangkok. The Chapter will release further information soon. Tourism Operators and Academia Bridge the GapA new bridge has been built between tourism operators and tourism educators. The PATA Thailand Chapter's "The Future is Now - Educating the Educators and Training the Trainers" workshop on August 19 showed how both sides could benefit from better information and personnel sharing. During the event, leading hotel, tour operators and teachers addressed dilemmas such as quality vs quantity of education, the six mistakes in education, and how to avoid them, and the need for a permanent industry-university liaison group. Workshop organizer, Mr Bert van Walbeek of The Winning Edge said: "While priorities varied, all speakers were agreed on the need for continuous investment in education and training for all aspects of Thailand's tourism future." He added: "Education and training is getting more expensive, but in a people-first sector such as tourism, a lack of skills will cost us more in the long run." dusitD2 baraquda pattaya to Open Late 2008 Dusit International will launch its second dusitD2 property with the opening of the dusitD2 baraquda pattaya in late 2008.
