  • PATA and Skal Unite in Phuket
    On September 24, the PATA Thailand Chapter and Skål International Phuket & Southern Thailand held a dinner and presentation event to explore cooperation for the benefit of Phuket's tourism industry. Over 100 participants turned up, including senior Thai government VIPs, Phuket tourism association leaders and honorary consuls from eight countries. Speakers included PATA Interim CEO Bill Calderwood and PATA Thailand Chapter executive committee members Bert van Walbeek, Blair Speers, Luzi Matzig and Ben Montgomery. Skal Phuket & South Thailand President Blandine Cressard gave an address. Chapter Chairman, Mr van Walbeek said: "Thank you to the Skal team and Blair who did a great job in organising the evening. PATA is on the way to creating a new Chapter in Phuket that will work closely with Skal, as we do in Bangkok." Mr Speers, who is IT Chair of the PATA Thailand Chapter, was the main organiser of the event. Presentations from the evening will soon be available on www.pata-thailand.org.

    Khiri Travel Expands into Myanmar
    The Khiri Travel Group has announced further expansion with an office in Myanmar headed by Mr Edwin Briels as General Manager. The new office opened in Yangon in August. Khiri Travel, founded in 1994, currently has seven offices operational in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.     Centara Reaches 53 Properties and Posts Record Results
    Centara Hotels & Resorts has reached a total of 53 properties under its current five-year expansion plan. It has reported revenues of 4,105 million baht for the financial year 2010, an increase of 6.3% over the previous year. The company now has more than 10,000 rooms in hotel and resort properties in eight countries: Thailand, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. During the first half of this year, Centara Hotels & Resorts acquired an existing resort property on the island of Phu Quoc, in Vietnam. Rebranded as Chen Sea Resort & Spa Phu Quoc (part of the Centara Boutique Collection), the resort presently has 39 rooms. Its expansion plan for next year anticipates a further 90 rooms being added. At the beginning of July, Centara Hotels & Resorts acquired a five-star resort at Mai Khao Beach in Phuket, which has been rebranded as Centara Grand West Sand Resort & Villas. The resort has a water park. Its current 316 rooms are expected to increase to 784 rooms by 2013. In the fourth quarter of 2011, Centara Hotels & Resorts is scheduled to open four properties: Centara Hotel & Convention Centre Khon Kaen (196 rooms); Baga Waterfront Resort & Spa Goa (Centara Boutique Collection, 30 rooms); Nova Hotel & Spa Pattaya (Centara Boutique Collection, 79 rooms); and Centara Hotel Manila (96 rooms).
